Ford is bringing back veteran engineers after an internal push to rely more heavily on artificial intelligence did not deliver the expected product quality. The company’s leadership acknowledged that simply introducing AI was not enough to replace accumulated engineering judgment.

The move is a useful reminder that AI tools can accelerate parts of engineering work without owning the full quality loop. In complex manufacturing, tacit knowledge, review habits and failure experience remain hard to automate.

For other companies, Ford’s reversal is a caution against treating AI adoption as a staffing substitute before the surrounding process is proven.
