Firefox’s Smart Window beta is now powered by Mistral models for users in France and North America, giving Mozilla’s AI browsing assistant a new engine for search, tab-based research and recalling pages a user previously visited. The United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later this year.
Mozilla describes Smart Window as an assistant that can use the context of open browser tabs to find and explain information. Mistral says it is fine-tuning models for regional languages, dialects and cultural context rather than serving every market with an identical setup. That localization is central to the partnership’s pitch, though the announcement does not provide performance comparisons with other browser assistants.
The companies also set out concrete privacy terms. Conversations are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default, and Mistral has agreed to zero data retention for the service. Smart Window remains a beta, so availability is limited and its practical privacy will also depend on the final product controls and any websites or outside services involved in a task. For Mozilla, the partnership offers an alternative AI provider while preserving a browser interface in which users can choose how they explore the web.
