European officials are discussing ways to strengthen the region’s AI independence, with Austria proposing an effort to lure Anthropic to Europe. The idea reflects concern that Europe relies heavily on foreign model providers and infrastructure.

The proposal is part industrial policy and part strategic positioning. If Europe wants more control over AI deployment, it needs access to leading models, compute and talent inside its own regulatory environment.

Whether Anthropic or similar labs would make such a move is uncertain, but the discussion shows how AI capacity is becoming a geopolitical asset, not just a software market.
