Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold group has largely broken apart, according to The Decoder, marking a major shift for one of the lab’s best-known scientific AI teams.
The report says most researchers who worked on AlphaFold are now assigned to other projects, while almost a quarter have left Google DeepMind altogether. Some key authors have moved to Anthropic, extending the broader talent flow from major AI labs into frontier-model companies.
AlphaFold helped define DeepMind’s reputation by showing that machine learning could make real progress on protein-structure prediction, a problem with direct importance for biology and drug discovery. A team reshuffle does not mean the technology disappears, but it changes the institutional focus behind it.
The practical question is what comes next for scientific AI inside DeepMind. The company may still build on AlphaFold’s legacy, but the reported departures suggest the original group is no longer the concentrated research unit that produced its biggest breakthroughs.
