Cloudflare has opened a closed beta for a gateway that charges AI agents each time they access a website, API, dataset or Model Context Protocol tool. Sellers define which requests cost money and set fixed or variable prices without building a separate checkout flow.
The gateway uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status. A buyer receives payment instructions in the response, signs an authorization and gets the resource after settlement. Cloudflare handles verification, retries, analytics and protocol changes through Coinbase’s x402 facilitator. Payments currently settle in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, on the Base blockchain.
Early uses include per-request AI inference, Ceramic.ai web searches, Stocktwits market signals and API2PDF document generation. Cloudflare distinguishes this model from its Pay Per Use publishing system: the gateway fits resources where the request itself consumes value, while a page can be crawled once and reused many times downstream.
US-based Cloudflare customers can also pay for selected AI Gateway models at request time by specifying x402 as the payment method. The beta is limited to eligible US buyers and sellers, with more locations planned. The approach reduces account and prepaid-credit friction, but it also introduces stablecoin settlement and wallet management that many organizations will need to evaluate before agents can spend autonomously.
