Cloudflare has added a Web Search API to AI Gateway, giving applications a managed way to retrieve current web information before asking a model to answer. Initial search providers are Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup, and developers can use them through model-inference requests, a direct REST interface or Cloudflare Workers bindings.
The service returns structured snippets that can be inserted into a model’s context. That gives agents a search step instead of forcing them to guess page addresses or rely entirely on information captured during model training. AI Gateway remains the control point for billing, access rules, security and observability across those requests.
Cloudflare says participating providers must identify their crawlers as verified bots, respect robots.txt preferences and include links to the pages used in search results. Those requirements are intended to give site operators more visibility and control while preserving citations for application users.
Developers can select a specific search provider or use Cloudflare’s automatic option, which chooses among the available services. The announcement establishes an integration layer rather than a new Cloudflare-built search index, so coverage, ranking and result quality can vary with the chosen provider. Teams using retrieved text must also continue treating web content as untrusted input and check sources before acting on it.
