OpenAI has introduced a Data agent for ChatGPT Work that lets employees analyze company information by asking questions in plain language. The agent can connect to approved systems including BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, Snowflake, ClickHouse, MongoDB and Datadog, as well as files in Google Drive and SharePoint.
It uses definitions and relationships from existing semantic layers, analytics tools and business-intelligence dashboards to interpret company-specific metrics. Users can ask follow-up questions, inspect evidence and turn the results into interactive dashboards. The agent can also work with products such as Power BI, Tableau, Oracle BI and ThoughtSpot.
Administrators decide which connections and roles are available. Queries inherit the connected account’s table, row and column permissions. The agent can recommend next steps and send findings through email or Slack, but connected-tool actions require user approval.
The Data agent appears in the ChatGPT Work plugin directory and must be installed and configured by an administrator. OpenAI cites internal and alpha-customer usage, but the announcement does not provide independent accuracy measurements. Organizations will still need dependable metric definitions, access controls and human review for consequential analyses.
