OpenAI has expanded its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so the assistant can inspect information across open tabs when a user tags Chrome in the web or desktop app. The feature can compare products or contractors, extract details into a spreadsheet and use an open document to prepare another browser task.
The extension can also place ChatGPT in Chrome’s sidebar with access to the user’s conversation history. In ChatGPT Work mode, OpenAI says it can control tabs to fill forms, send messages, download files and organize related pages. One suggested workflow asks the assistant to complete a registration form from an event brief but stop before submission, showing that users can place a boundary before an irreversible step.
The update brings browser-automation functions into standard Chrome after OpenAI discontinued its ChatGPT Atlas browser. It also puts the product closer to Google’s Gemini-based auto-browsing features without requiring users to switch browsers.
Access to tabs can expose sensitive personal, work or account information, and actions such as messages or form submissions can have real consequences. Users should review extension permissions and supervise final actions rather than assuming the model will interpret every page correctly. The report did not specify a separate availability schedule beyond the extension update.
