Advertising in ChatGPT has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch. Tens of thousands of advertisers now use the platform, and self-service access through Ads Manager is opening across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

The company reports that ChatGPT ads are available in more than 40 countries through its sales team, agencies and technology partners. Small and medium-sized businesses became a material part of the business after Ads Manager launched in May. Most campaigns now use cost-per-click or outcome-optimized bidding, while product feeds, geographic targeting and custom audiences have been added.

Ads use the current conversation to choose relevant placements and may also use broader ChatGPT activity where local rules and user settings allow. OpenAI says advertisements are labeled, kept separate from answers and do not influence those answers. It also says advertisers cannot access private conversations and users can control personalization.

Advertising joins subscriptions, enterprise products and usage-based APIs in OpenAI’s revenue mix. The company presents the ad-supported free tier as one way to serve more than one billion weekly active users, while the broader global rollout makes its privacy and separation promises increasingly important to verify.
