Caterpillar is applying lessons from autonomous mining to AI tools that technicians and industrial operators can use in daily work. Its approach centers on fitting software into established, safety-sensitive processes rather than asking workers to build new routines around a general-purpose chatbot.
The company’s Cat AI Assistant lets a technician beside a machine use voice commands to retrieve repair procedures, troubleshoot faults and identify parts before beginning a job. Caterpillar says customers, operators and technicians are already using the tool. It draws on proprietary information from roughly 1.6 million connected assets and more than 16 petabytes of structured data.
That product builds on decades of automation in mines, where labor shortages, remote locations and hazardous conditions made autonomous equipment valuable. Caterpillar now sells automated haul trucks, drills, underground loaders and dozers, along with command-center software, fleet management and remote terrain intelligence.
The company is also using AI to scan sites, create digital twins of manufacturing operations and support internal work. A digital twin is a software model of a physical site or machine. The mining experience gives Caterpillar extensive operational data, but moving into more dynamic construction sites still requires systems to handle changing terrain, mixed equipment and people working nearby.
