A Berlin court has ruled that Google’s AI-generated summaries are a “new search result format” rather than original content controlled by Google, The Decoder reports. The case involved a perfume company whose brand appeared alongside cheaper knockoffs in AI search.
The ruling matters because courts are beginning to define responsibility for AI-generated search answers. It partly contrasts with a Munich decision that held Google directly liable for false AI responses, though the cases differ.
For search platforms and publishers, these decisions will shape how AI summaries are treated under content, competition, and liability rules.
