Backflip AI has released a model that converts 3D scans into editable parametric CAD models, aiming to shorten a reverse-engineering task that can take hours of specialist work. The tool is available as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion.
The practical target is manufacturing, where many existing parts have no useful digital model. Backflip CEO Greg Mark told The Decoder that most factories have digital models for less than one percent of their parts. If a scan can become an editable CAD file, teams can modify, reproduce, or document legacy components more quickly.
The source says the startup is backed by $30 million in funding, but it does not establish how well the model handles difficult geometries, damaged parts, or production tolerances. For engineers, the value will depend on whether the generated model is accurate enough to edit and manufacture, not merely whether it looks right on screen.
