AWS has published a supported architecture for adding live web search to Claude Desktop when Amazon Bedrock supplies the model. The setup routes searches through Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, addressing the knowledge-cutoff problem without giving the desktop app a separate third-party search key.

AgentCore’s managed search service uses the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, and an Amazon index covering tens of billions of documents. AWS says queries remain inside its infrastructure. Claude Desktop connects to an AgentCore Gateway with the Web Search target enabled, allowing the model to retrieve current documentation, pricing and other changing information.

The reference design uses AWS IAM Identity Center for employee sign-in and Amazon Cognito as a federation layer. Identity Center authenticates the user through SAML, Cognito issues a signed JSON Web Token, and AgentCore checks that token on every request. Organizations can therefore apply their existing identity governance instead of distributing another credential.

The walkthrough requires an AWS account, administrative access for Identity Center, Claude Desktop configured to use Bedrock, and current AWS command-line and Python tooling. Web Search is currently limited to the Northern Virginia, Ireland and Tokyo regions. The design is useful for AWS-centered organizations, but it adds several identity components and is not presented as a simple consumer setup.
