Amazon is reportedly changing course on parts of its in-house Nova AI model strategy. The Decoder, citing Business Insider, says development has been scaled back on several Nova models, including Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas, while existing customers continue to receive basic support.

The company is not leaving frontier AI research. Resources are reportedly shifting to a Frontier Model Research group led by Pieter Abbeel, who joined Amazon through its acquisition of robotics startup Covariant. A new foundation model is expected at re:Invent later this year.

The reported pullback follows layoffs in Amazon’s AGI division and the closure of an AGI Lab created after the Adept acquisition. Amazon also remains a major investor in external model companies, including Anthropic.

The shift suggests Amazon is focusing its internal bets rather than trying to maintain a broad family of competing models. For customers, the immediate concern is whether Nova support remains stable while Amazon redirects research toward fewer, more ambitious systems.
