Amazon is reportedly scaling back several of its in-house Nova AI models while shifting resources toward a new Frontier Model Research group. Business Insider reported that Nova Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas will remain online for existing customers but are no longer being actively developed.
The company is not leaving foundation models. The Decoder reports that Amazon is now focusing on a group led by Pieter Abbeel, who joined through the acquisition of Covariant, with a new foundation model expected at re:Invent this fall.
The change shows how expensive and selective frontier AI work has become. Large companies may keep earlier product lines available while concentrating research talent and compute on fewer bets. For AWS customers, the immediate effect appears limited because existing Nova services remain available. The bigger question is whether Amazon’s next model can close the gap with the external labs it also backs through major investments.
