Scammers are using AI-generated coursework to turn college enrollment systems into a financial-aid fraud channel.
The Decoder, citing The New Yorker, reports that fraudsters enroll fake students at US community colleges, use AI tools to complete assignments, and collect aid money. Faculty members described suspicious enrollment patterns and coursework that appeared generated rather than written by real students.
The problem is different from ordinary cheating because it combines identity abuse, automated writing, and public funding. Colleges have to distinguish between struggling real students, students misusing AI, and accounts that may not represent real learners at all.
The report shows how generative AI can lower the cost of fraud in systems that depend on written participation as proof of activity. Better detection may help, but schools also need administrative checks that do not punish legitimate students who use assistive tools honestly.
