Creators on X are using AI-generated melodramas to win attention and earn money from platform engagement, according to WIRED. The posts often read like first-person stories about betrayal, courtrooms, family secrets and sudden justice, but many are synthetic clickbait.

The format is effective because it is built for curiosity gaps. A dramatic opening pulls readers into a long thread, while the platform’s recommendation system rewards replies, pauses and continued reading. WIRED found creators who openly use AI to produce these stories and benefit from X’s revenue-sharing incentives.

The issue is not just low-quality entertainment. When synthetic stories become profitable at scale, platforms can fill with emotional content that looks personal but is designed primarily to manipulate engagement metrics. That makes it harder for users to tell real testimony from manufactured drama.

The practical limit is that this behavior follows incentives already present on social networks. AI lowers the cost of producing endless variations, but the business model rewards whatever keeps people scrolling.
