The limit is context. A model may find statistical structure, but decipherment also depends on archaeology, history, linguistics, and careful reasoning about what a symbol could have meant in a specific culture. Pattern matching can suggest leads; it cannot by itself prove an interpretation.

The practical value is collaboration. AI can help scholars search through possibilities and detect connections that would be slow to check manually. Human researchers still decide which explanations fit the evidence. For lost languages, the strongest results will likely come from that combination rather than from automated translation alone.
