A survey paper from Tencent and several Chinese universities argues that the next step for workplace AI is not simply better chatbot responses. The authors say systems need to complete full tasks in persistent environments if they are to function as digital colleagues.
That distinction matters because much of today’s AI still stops at producing text, code snippets or recommendations. Real coworker behavior requires tracking context, using tools, recovering from errors and finishing work that spans multiple steps.
The paper places current agent research in that larger frame: progress will depend on execution reliability and environmental memory, not only benchmark scores for individual answers.
