AI companies race for forward-deployed engineers who can prove ROI

Forward-deployed engineers are becoming one of the AI industry’s most sought-after roles, TechCrunch reports. These engineers work inside client organizations to build, implement, and deploy software or AI models rather than simply hand over tools.

Executive search firm Christian & Timbers estimates that only about 2,000 U.S. engineers have the mix of sector knowledge, applied AI experience, and client credibility needed to consistently deliver meaningful enterprise ROI. The firm says that is 2,000 total, not 2,000 available.

The report, based on executive surveys and interviews conducted in the first half of 2026, projects demand for these specialists to rise 2,100 percent by year-end. By the end of the second quarter, 70 percent of surveyed companies were planning to hire FDEs, up from 5 to 10 percent at the start of the year.

The trend shows where AI adoption is getting stuck. Enterprises can access strong models; the harder task is turning them into workflow changes that save money or create revenue.
