Researchers from Google, HHMI Janelia, and collaborating institutions have published a complete wiring diagram of the male fruit fly’s brain and central nervous system. The connectome, a map of neurons and their connections, is the largest brain map produced so far and complements an earlier reconstruction of the female fly brain.
The project took about a decade and used AI-assisted image analysis to turn electron-microscope data into a cell-level network. Fruit flies are useful because their nervous systems are small enough to map but still produce complex, repeatable behavior. Scientists cannot yet perform the same reconstruction for the roughly 86 billion neurons in a human brain.
Having maps for both sexes gives researchers a way to study how differences in neural wiring contribute to sex-specific behavior. The work, published in Cell, can also help scientists trace circuits involved in perception, movement, and responses to stimuli. Similar techniques are being applied to fish and mice as researchers work toward understanding larger nervous systems.
A connectome is a structural map, not a complete explanation of thought or behavior. It shows which cells are linked but does not by itself capture every changing chemical signal or learned state in a living brain. The immediate value is a detailed shared reference that laboratories can use to form and test more precise biological hypotheses.
